About the building (more)
The old V-shed has been stripped back to its original industrial shell and opened up to exploit natural light and ventilation. The handcrafted French oak staircase dominates the central atrium, adding to the sense of space and drama in the building. Wood has been used in preference to steel to lighten the building’s carbon footprint: carbon is naturally sequestered in the timber, which is lighter, more efficiently transported and more efficiently produced.
Energy use has been minimised in both the building and running of the place. Bordeaux Quay has no air conditioning beyond basic and necessary kitchen extraction; rather, the building harnesses the stack effect to create natural airflow around the structure. Rainwater is collected from the roof to flush the toilets, which are lit by motion sensors to reduce wastage. Everything that can be will be reused, recycled or composted.
